With a strong foundation in engineering education, the Metallurgy Group at the University of Ferrara has expanded its course offerings in recent years. This includes specialized courses for Master’s students in Chemistry and a Professional Master’s in Digital Industry Technologies. The aim is to equip students with comprehensive and cutting-edge knowledge to meet the demands of today's job market. Courses cover a wide spectrum of topics, from the science of metallic materials and production processes to metallographic characterization and failure analysis. This provides students with the essential skills to excel in the industrial sector.
Our Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering offers specialised training in the science of metallic materials, with a particular focus on steels and cast irons. From the theoretical foundations of crystal structure and phase transformations to an in-depth analysis of defects and fracture mechanisms, our programs provide the skills necessary to operate competently in the design, production, and maintenance of ferrous alloy components.

Our Master's programme specialises mechanical engineers in the science of metallic materials, building upon knowledge gained during the undergraduate degree and providing advanced skills. Through in-depth study of steels, light alloys, and superalloys, students will acquire advanced competencies in microstructural characterisation, manufacturing processes, and heat and surface treatments. Particular emphasis will be placed on metallic coatings and their applications, exploring various deposition techniques and their effects on the surface properties of materials. Upon completion of the programme, engineers will be capable of selecting the most suitable materials for complex applications, optimising manufacturing processes, and resolving issues related to failures and corrosion, contributing to technological innovation across numerous industrial sectors.

The Metallurgy Group at the University of Ferrara offers students a unique range of opportunities to undertake their final year research project. Beyond the traditional proposals within the university, there are numerous collaborations with Italian and international companies and universities, allowing students to engage with cutting-edge industrial and academic environments. Overseas destinations span from Sweden to Norway, via Mexico and Germany, offering a highly valuable international experience. Many former students have appreciated this opportunity, often finding in these experiences the springboard for their professional careers, in some cases securing direct employment with the companies where they completed their thesis.
